The third-ranked Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in MCAC North play with a 75-64 win over Minnesota North College - Rainy River Saturday afternoon in the Northland Gym.
The Pioneers got a four-quarter battle from the Voyageurs and never completely put the Voyageurs away. The teams traded leads early until the Pioneers went up 6-4 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Pioneers led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. They led by as many as 14 in the second quarter before taking a 42-29 lead into the locker room.
The Pioneers led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter and were up 16 when the fourth quarter started.
They Voyageurs battled back in the fourth quarter and got to within 11 points on multiple occasions, but they couldn't draw any closer as the Pioneers held on for the 11-point win.
Emma Osborn, Tiyana Schwinghammer and Josie Iverson finished in double figures for the Pioneers. Osborn drained five three-pointers en route to an 18-point outing. Schwinghammer completed a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Iverson scored 11 points and dished out a team-high seven assists.
The Pioneers improved to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in MCAC North play with the win. The Voyageurs fell to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in division play.
