Northland Community & Technical College took the first two sets in Wednesday's MCAC Northern Division volleyball match-up against Alexandria Technical & Community College at the Northland Gym in Thief River Falls. The Pioneers were unable to pull off the match victory, however, as the Legends claimed the third, fourth and fifth sets to escape with a 3-2 win.
The Pioneers trailed by five on multiple occasions during the opening set, including a 20-15 deficit that led Head Coach Kelly Olson to call the team's second timeout. Out of the timeout the Pioneers won six of the next seven points to tie the set at 21-21. They ended up finishing the set on a 10-2 run to take the set 25-23.
Set number two was the Pioneers' strongest of the night. After trading leads and small runs early, the Pioneers opened up their biggest lead of the set with a 16-13 advantage through 29 points. They would lead by as many as four, before the Legends rallied to get within a point, 21-20. The Pioneers regained control and took the set 25-23.
The Pioneers and Legends traded leads early in the third set. The Legends used a 6-0 run late in the set to go up 18-12. Much like the first set, the Pioneers rallied. They got to within two of the Legends at one point but lost the set 25-22.
The Pioneers started off strong in the fourth set, winning six of the first eight points. Things got ugly from there, however, as the Legends won 15 of the next 20 points to take a 17-12 lead. The Legends would remain in control for the remainder of the set, winning 25-16 to force a fifth set.
The Legends kept the momentum going at the start of the fifth set by winning four of the first five points. The Pioneers won four of the next six to get within a point of the Legends and force a timeout by the Legends. The Legends added to their lead by winning the next three points coming out of the timeout. After taking their own timeout, the Pioneers won four straight to tie the set 9-9. After trading side-outs, the Pioneers went on 3-0 run to take a 12-10 lead. The Legends took their final timeout. Play resumed with the Legends winning the final five points of the contest.
The Pioneers have faced the Legends three times this season. The Legends have won all three meetings – 3-2 in a non-conference match-up at Anoka-Ramsey Community College on Aug. 23; 3-1 at Alexandria on Sept. 11; and 3-2 Wednesday night in the Northland Gym.
The Pioneers (10-10, 7-5) have two regular season matches remaining. They host Minnesota North College - Itasca on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m., before traveling to International Falls on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
