Northland Community & Technical College defeated Minnesota North College - Itasca in four sets Wednesday night to conclude the home portion of its 2024 volleyball schedule.
The Pioneers trailed for most of set number one and took a timeout to regroup when the score was 19-14 in favor of the Vikings. The Pioneers responded by coming out of the timeout with a 6-0 run to take a 20-19 lead, on its way to a 25-21 opening set win.
The Pioneers opened the second set with a 6-0 run and took the set 25-12.
The Vikings came on strong in the third set and briefly pulled away with a 12-8 lead. The teams traded small runs and split the next 24 points to give the Vikings a 24-20 advantage. The Pioneers rallied with a side-out and four consecutive service points on the serve of
Annelise Castillo to take a 25-24 lead. The Vikings answered with a side-out and two consecutive service points to win the set 27-25.
The Pioneers dropped their last two matches prior to Wednesday night's match in five sets. In both cases, they won the first two sets, but failed to put their opponent away in 3-2 losses to MNC-Hibbing and Alexandria. There was no let-down Wednesday, however. The Pioneers raced to an 8-2 lead to start the fourth set and cruised to a 25-14 win.
The Pioneers improved to 11-10 overall and 8-5 in the MCAC Northern Division with the win over the Vikings. The Vikings fell to 4-15 overall and 3-11 in the MCAC North with the loss. The Pioneers wrap up the regular season Friday night at MNC-Rainy River (14-10, 8-5).
