International Falls, Minn. - 

Northland Community & Technical College was guaranteed a spot in the postseason when it took the court for an MCAC North Volleyball match Friday night in International Falls against Minnesota North College - Rainy River. What was not known was the Pioneers' seeding and, subsequently, which district tournament it would be assigned. 

The Voyageurs defeated the Pioneers in four sets, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-17, to clinch a third-place finish in the MCAC North with a 9-5 division record. Had the Pioneers won, they would have clinched third place outright in the division and would have been placed in the District 13B bracket. Instead, the loss dropped the Pioneers to 8-6 and a head-to-head tie with Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range.

The Pioneers and Norse split their regular-season meetings, with each team winning in five sets on its home court. The next tiebreaking criterion was the teams' head-to-head record against the first, second, and third-place finishers in that order. The Pioneers were the only team from the MCAC North to defeat Central Lakes during the regular season, and their 1-1 record against the Raiders gave them the tiebreaker over the Norse, who were 0-2 against the Raiders. 

Teams qualifying for the postseason from the MCAC include: North - 1. Central Lakes 13-1, 20-6; 2. Alexandria Tech 10-4, 18-7; 3. MNC-Rainy River 9-5, 15-11; 4. Northland 8-6, 11-11; South - 1. MN West 11-1, 30-4; 2. Century 10-2, 25-3; 3. St. Cloud Tech 9-3, 17-6; 4. Rochester 6-6, 11-12.
