The second-ranked Northland women's basketball team was held to six second-quarter points in a 63-49 loss to third-ranked Anoka-Ramsey Community College Friday night in Coon Rapids.
The Pioneers have struggled against the Golden Rams in general over the past three seasons, but beating the Golden Rams on their home court in Coon Rapids has been downright impossible. The Pioneers last true road win over the Golden Rams came on Dec. 2, 2017. Since then, the Pioneers are 2-7 against the Golden Rams, with all seven losses coming in Coon Rapids and both Pioneer wins coming at a neutral site.
The Pioneers raced to a 14-12 lead through one quarter of play Friday night. The Pioneers' offense faded in the second quarter, and the Golden Rams took a 27-20 lead into the locker room. The Golden Rams added to their lead in the second half to stretch the final margin to 14 points.
Tiyana Schwinhammer was the lone starter to reach double figures in scoring for the Pioneers, with
Rylie Klopp adding 14 points in 21 minutes coming off the bench.
The sting of defeat didn't last long for the Pioneers, who led from start to finish in a 70-50 win over St. Cloud Technical & Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers outscored the Cyclones by 11 in the opening quarter, led 30-20 at the half and doubled the lead over the final 20 minutes.
Klopp made her first collegiate start and led the Pioneers with 17 points and seven rebounds. Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Pioneers was sophomore
Josie Iverson, who scored 15 points and added a team-high four assists.
