Arionna Beatty picked up three wins by fall and finished fourth at 145 pounds in the Luther Open women's division Saturday at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Beatty was one of nine Northland wrestlers who competed in the prestigious event that included 487 combined entries in the men's elite and silver divisions and 209 entrants in the women's division. Both divisions featured teams from all three levels of NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA.
Beatty opened the tournament with wins by fall over Kaylei Sanford of Wisconsin Stevens Point and Kayeleigh Bowden of Buena Vista to reach the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Beatty faced a familiar opponent in Nevaeh Leonard of Southeast Community College. The two met in the wrestle backs at last year's NJCAA championships with Leonard winning by 10-0 technical fall on her way to a fourth-place finish at 143 pounds. Both wrestlers are highly ranked to start the 2024-25 season, with Beatty currently ranked seventh at 138 and Leonard ranked third at 145.
The re-match at the Luther Open featured three lead changes. Leonard scored first on a step-out. Beatty took the lead on a four-point chin whip. Leonard took a 5-4 lead with a pair of two-point takedowns. She added to her lead early in the second period with a go-behind takedown to go in front 7-4 early in the second period. Beatty cut the deficit to one point with a go-behind of her own, but Leonard added to her lead with another defensive score. Beatty trailed 11-6 when she threw Leonard to the mat and secured the win by fall.
Beatty lost her final two bouts by 10-0 technical fall scores. In the semifinals, she lost to unattached wrestler Valerie Hamilton, who is a former USA Wrestling National Champion. In the third place match, Beatty dropped a 10-0 decision to Mckenzie Cook of Eureka.
Wins were tough to come by Saturday for the Northland men's wrestling team. The Pioneers had eight wrestlers entered in Saturday's Luther Open, with freshman
Kameron Palmer securing the team's only win – a 17-1 technical fall over Morgan Bunner of Southeast Community College.
The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday night with a home dual against NCAA Division II Minnesota State University Moorhead.
