Minneapolis, Minn. - 

A trio of Northland freshmen earned top-six finishes at the 2024 Auggie Invitational hosted by Augsburg University on Saturday, Nov. 16. Bryan Arevalo led the Pioneers with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds. Qilee Jackson finished fifth at 197 and Gabe Michels finished sixth a 125. 

Arevalo received a bye to the semifinal round, where he faced eventual runner-up Apollo Ashby of Augusburg. Arevalo and Ashby traded first-period takedowns and wrestled to a 4-4 tie score through the first three minutes of action. However, Ashby broke the match open in the second period with an escape, takedown and a pair of turns before winning the match by fall. Arevalo bounced back with a dominant 16-1 technical fall win over Chase Greiner of Central College to secure his first collegiate win and a spot in the third-place match. Facing Addan Schmidt of Luther College in the third-place match, Aravelo was caught out of position attempting a fireman's carry and eventually pinned. 

Jackson lost matches by fall in the quarterfinals and consolation semifinals before righting the ship with a first-period win by fall over Darius Hardy of Iowa Lakes in the fifth-place match at 197 pounds. The win over Hardy was Jackson's first at the college level after coming close on multiple occasions over the season's first two weeks. 

Michels went 2-2 to place sixth at 125. This is his second top-six finish this year. Michels opened the tournament with a loss to Augsburg's Ethan Aird of Augsburg, but he bounced back with wins by fall over Luis Lopez of Luther College and Cael Morrow of Minnesota State Mankato. Facing Dominic Chimeno of Iowa Lakes in the fifth-place match,  Michels rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to take a 16-8 lead at the end of the first period. Michels had successfully put Chimeno on his back twice in the first period but couldn't secure the fall. Chimeno took advantage of the second chance and threw Michels to his back for the fall 41 seconds into the second period. 

Also competing for the Pioneers on Saturday were Kameron Palmer and Ethan Stegman, 133 and 157, respectively in the freshman division, and Josiah Crandall, gold 125; Ethan Horn, gold 141; Christian Kirchner, gold 141; Ethan Horn, gold 141; and Lucas Urness, gold 285.
