Minot, N.D. -

Northland Community & Technical College and Bismarck State College wrestled to a five-to-five split in matches in their dual meet in the opening dual meet of the Beaver Bash Duals Saturday afternoon in Minot, N.D., with a major decision at heavyweight lifting Bismarck State to a 27-26 in in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
The Pioneers got wins in five of the first eight matches. Sophomore Josiah Crandall won by forfeit at 125. The Mystics answered with a win by fall from Jack Coles over Kameron Palmer at 133 to tie the dual meet score.
The Pioneers reeled off three straight wins to take a 20-6 lead. At 141, Ethan Horn won by 18-3 technical fall over Ethan Kuntz. Christian Kirchner won a thriller 15-14 over Brendan Winn-Kelley at 149; and Kale Geiser pinned Riley Johnson at 157.
The Mystics cut the deficit to two points with a win by fall from Colton King over Ethan Stegman at 165 and Dillon Spaulding over Mitchell Christen at 174.
At 184, a pair of 165-pounders squared-off, with Bryan Arevalo pinning Izac Turner to give the Pioneers an eight point lead with two matches remaining.
Northland could have won the dual by winning one of the final two matches or avoiding bonus-point losses in both matches. The Mystics got bonus points at 197, as Isaiah Horan won by 19-2 technical fall over Qilee Jackson. That left the outcome of the dual in the hands of the heavyweight match. Bismarck State heavyweight Treyson Renken pushed undersized Northland heavyweight Avant Jackson around the mat to coax a couple of early stalling calls in the first period. Renken's lead grew to 2-0 when the pair were called for double stalling in the second period. Renken added a three-point takedown early in the third period and he caught Jackson on the edge later in the period for a quick three-point takedown and two-point nearfall to build a 10-1 lead. Jackson got an escape, but couldn't get a takedown of his own to erase the major.
Had the dual meet ended in a tie, the tiebreaker would have gone to Bismarck State due to a higher number of match points in bouts that end in a decision, major decision or technical fall, 46-37. Both teams had five wins and both teams had the same number of six-point wins (falls, forfeits and defaults), which are criteria one and two for breaking a tie by NCAA rules. Had the teams been even on match points, the additional tie-breaking criteria would have been most nearfall points in decisions, major decisions and technical falls; most takedowns in decisions, major decisions and technical falls; least number of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties; and the first takedown of the meet.
The Pioneers were not able to pick up a win in the days second dual meet, falling 54-0 to host Minot State. The Beavers picked up five wins by fall and a pair of forfeits. The Pioneers were competitive at a couple of weights. At 125, Dylan McDonald defeated Crandall 1-0, and at 149, Evan Vieira defeated Horn 13-4, despite Horn gaining almost four minutes of riding time in the final two periods. The Pioneers were also competitive in a couple of exhibition matches, with McDonald hanging on for a 6-5 win over Northland's Gabe Michels; and Geiser picking up a win by fall over Tristan Pekas in an exhibition match at 157.
The Pioneers are off until Dec. 7 when they travel to Moorhead for the Dragon Open. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m.
