The continued improvement of the second-ranked (NJCAA Division III) Northland women's basketball team was on full display Tuesday night when the team defeated Concordia College JV 60-52 to avenge a three-point loss on Nov. 20. The win was the fourth straight for the Pioneers and it marked the second time this season that the Pioneers defeated a team after losing the first meeting.Â
The Pioneers used a late surge to take a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cobbers went on a 13-8 run over the first six minutes of the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead, but the Pioneers responded with a 9-1 run over the final four minutes of the half to take a 29-23 lead into the locker room.Â
Concordia College dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 18-10, to take a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter featured four ties and five lead changes, with the Pioneers taking a 54-49 lead with just over three minutes remaining. The Pioneers scored four of their final six points from the foul line and stood tall defensively to close out the win.Â
