Worthington, Minn. -
The Northland men's basketball team dropped a pair of road games Friday and Saturday to end the first semester portion of the 2024-25 schedule. The Pioneers began the weekend trip with an 85-70 loss to the Ridgewater Warriors Friday night in Willmar, before falling 71-65 Saturday in Worthington.
The Warriors used an 11-2 run to break an early tie and gain some separation with a 17-8 lead six minutes into the contest. The Pioneers used an 11-4 run to get within two of the Warriors at 21-19. The Warriors outscored the Pioneers 16-10 for the remainder of the half and took a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
The Warriors started the second half on a 4-0 run to push their lead to 12 points. They led by as many as 17 points in the second half before claiming the 15-point win.
Ridgewater's Tyrese Mayo led all scorers with 23 points and he was one of four Warriors to reach double figures in scoring.
Isaiah Brown led the Pioneers with a 21-point effort. He was joined by
Etienne Aime and
Zeke Aime with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pioneers led 21-17 12 minutes into Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays finished the half on a 19-7 run to take a 36-28 lead into the half. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead in the second half and got within one of the Blue Jays at 58-57 with just under five minutes remaining. They got within one again, trailing 66-65 with just over a minute to go, but a questionable call on
Tre Jones sent Minnesota West's Zachary Rygg to the line for two free throws. Rygg made one of two shots to give the Blue Jays a 67-65 lead. The Pioneers turned the ball over the ensuing possession. The Blue Jays added to their lead with a bucket by Karashara Ojulo to go in front 69-65. A three-point attempt by
Tre Jones bounced off the back of the rim and ricocheted out of bounds to give possession back to the Blue Jays. After a Northland foul, Minnesota West's Zach Hayenga drained both free throws to put the Blue Jays in front by what would end up be the winning margin.
Hayenga, 23, and Keion Irving, 19, led the Blue Jays with 23 and 19 points, respectively. The Pioneers' top scorers were
Tre Jones, 17,
Isaiah Brown, 15, and
Zeke Aime, 14.
The Pioneers are off until Sunday, Dec. 29. when they travel to Brainerd for the Central Lakes Tournament. Northland faces Riverland at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, before wrapping up the two-day tournament against Ridgewater at noon on Monday, Dec. 30.
