The Northland Community & Technical College men's basketball team has struggled in close games early in the 2024-25 season. Five of the Pioneers' seven losses were by seven points or less and the Pioneers had a lead at some point in the final five minutes of each game. One such game was a 69-62 loss at Oak Hills Christian College in Bemidji (Minn.) on Nov. 5, when the Wolfpack ended the game on a 7-0 run.
The Pioneers got another crack at the Wolfpack Tuesday night in Thief River Falls and the rematch wasn't close. The Pioneers never trailed at any point. They opened the game with an 11-2 run, pulled away for a 45-27 lead at the half and kept the pressure going for all 40 minutes to avenge the previous loss with a dominant 88-61 win.
The Pioneers out-rebounded the Wolfpack 44-36 and shot 44 percent (36-for-81) from the field as a team.
Four Pioneers reached double figures in scoring, led by
Zeke Aime, who scored 20 points, four of which came on a pair of first-half dunks.
Isaiah Brown recorded a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Lewis Jones drained a pair of three-pointers on his way to a 10-point night, and
Tre Jones went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc as part of a 14-point night coming off the bench.
Number One coming to town
The Pioneers will look to keep the momentum going from Tuesday night's dominant win when they host a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. On Friday night, the Pioneers look to avenge an earlier loss to Anoka-Ramsey Community College. The Golden Rams defeated the Pioneers 72-65 when the teams met Nov. 8 in Coon Rapids. On Saturday, the Pioneers host Riverland, who is currently ranked number one in NJCAA Divison III, with a 10-0 record. Friday night's game between the Pioneers and Golden Rams is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's contest between the Pioneers and Blue Devils is scheduled for 3 p.m.
