The Northland women's basketball team completed a perfect homestand Friday and Saturday, defeating Anoka-Ramsey Community College 57-48 on Friday night and Riverland 107-28 on Saturday.
On Friday night, the Pioneers avenged their only loss to another non-scholarship junior college. The Golden Rams defeated the Pioneers 63-49 when the teams met Nov. 8 in Coon Rapids. Friday's rematch was tight early on. The first field goal of the game came on a
Hannah Halvorson jumper with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter and it gave the Pioneers a 2-1. The Pioneers would go on to lead 10-8 at the end of one quarter and 31-23 through two.
The Pioneers added to their lead in the third quarter to take a 46-31 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers led by 17 points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, including a 51-34 advantage with 6:44 remaining. The Golden Rams rallied and got to within seven points of the Pioneers, 53-46, with 2:12 remaining. They couldn't draw any closer, however, as the Pioneers hung on for the win.
The Pioneers had big nights from sophomores
Tiyana Schwinghammer and Hannah Halverson, with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman
Jade Reese was the Pioneers' top scorer with 14 points. Schwinghammer narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go with her 13-point night.
Saturday was all Pioneers from the opening jump. The Pioneers scored over 20 points in each quarter of the 107-28 victory over the Blue Devils and never allowed more than 11.
All 11 Pioneers in uniform logged at least 10 minutes of playing time, with five players reaching double figures in scoring. Reese led all scorers with 19 points, and she added a team-high six rebounds and seven steals. Point guard
Josie Iverson scored 17 points and added six assists. Also reaching double figures were
Teagyn Fitzsimonds with 16 points, Halvorson with 14, and
Breanna Myers with 10 points.
