Northland baseball team opens season with trip to Arkansas

West Memphis, Ark. - 

A trip to West Memphis, Ark., to face Arkansas State Mid-South produced a 1-3 start to the season for the Northland basetball team. The Pioneers made the long drive to West Memphis Thursday and Friday, Feb. 15 and 16, before playing double headers against the Greyhounds on Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18. 
Saturday's twinbill was the first official action of the season for the Pioneers and it also marked the first time the team was able to play outdoors since fall ball. 
The Pioneers' rust was evident in game one with a 13-3, five-ining loss. Games two through four were much closer, however. The Pioneers dropped a 5-3 decision in Saturday's second game, but bounced back Sunday morning with an 11-10 come-from-behind win in the third game of the weekend series. 
The Pioneers were close to leaving town with a 2-2 split but the Greyhounds had other ideas. Down 11-10, the Greyhounds plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut the door in the top of the seventh to take the series 3-1. 
The Pioners are off for a couple of weekends. They return to action March 4 with 10 games between March 4 and March 9 at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
