Thief River Falls, Minn. - 

Freshmen Ethan Horn and Mitchell Christen had the top finishes for the Northland men's wrestling team at the Fourth Annual Northland Open held Saturday at Northland Community & Technical College. 

Horn finished third in a tough four-man round-robin. He dropped matches to Gabe Mortensen from NCAA Division II University of Mary and nationally-ranked Cole Holien of Ridgewater, before ending the day with a win by fall over Hayden Trupe of Minnesota North College - Itasca. 

Christian opened the tournament with a quarterfinal loss to Aiden Ruddy of Concordia College. He pinned Lance Fretwell of Concordia in the consolation quarterfinals and defeated Brady Kasprick of Concordia by medical forfeit in the consolation semifinals to set up a rematch with Ruddy for third place.

Ruddy scored the only points of the first period on a takedown with 22 seconds remaining. Likewise, Christen scored the only points of the second period on a reversal with 54 seconds remaining.

Christen trailed 3-2 at the start of the third period. After getting called for a pair of cautions when he started on bottom in the second period, Christen called for a third caution (false start), that gave an additional point to Ruddy. A reversal by Ruddy and escape by Christen made the score 6-3 with 1:18 left in the match. Christen had a chance to tie the score with a late takedown, but instead it was Ruddy who emerged from the scramble with control and a 9-3 win. 

Also competing for the Pioneers were Josiah Crandall at 125, who was forced to default out of the tournament after just one match; and Dexter Pollard, with a fifth place finish at 197.
