Rochester, Minn., March 13 -

The fifth-seeded Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team took control early in Wednesday's NJCAA Division III National Tournament opening round game against 12th-seeded Nassau Community College and never let up in an 84-49 win.

The Lions controlled the opening tip-off and took a 2-0 lead when Aiyana Hamilton drove toward the basket for an easy layup. The 2-0 lead would turn out to be the Lion's only lead of the day. On the ensuing possession, Northland sophomore Shavonda Bender missed a game-tying jumper. Freshman Tiyana Schwinghammer grabbed the offensive board and kicked the ball out to freshman Josie Iverson, who drained a three-pointer.

The Pioneers led 10-2 with 6:37 left to play in the opening quarter. The Lions answered with their only true run of the game with scores on three consecutive possessions to make the score 11-8 with 4:03 left in the first. The Pioneers maintained their composure, however, and finished the quarter on a 14-5 run.

The Pioneers were comfortably ahead 25-13 after one quarter was in the books, and they added another 11 points to their lead in the second after outscoring the Lions 19-8, and 13 in the third, with 22-9 edge.

Hamilton was the top scorer for the Lions with 15 points. She was one of two Lions to reach double figures.

The Pioneers had four players in double figures. Stealing the show was freshman Hannah Halvorson, who came off the bench to record a double with a game-high 16 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Emma Osborn scored 16 points, with 15 of the sixteen coming on a 5-for-13 three-point shooting effort. Schwinghammer scored 15 points, and sophomore Riley Mooney scored 13 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Up next for the Pioneers is a quarterfinal game against fourth-seeded Anoka-Ramsey (22-6). The scheduled start time is 4 p.m. The game will be live-streamed online at https://www.njcaa.org/network/live The live-stream can also be viewed at the Thief River Falls American Legion Club.
