The Northland baseball team made walk-off wins a common occurrence during a six-game home stand over the past two weekends. The Pioneers defeated the Minnesota North College - Vermilion Ironhawks 5-4 in a walk-off on April 6 and one week later on April 13, they finished off the Minnesota North College - Itasca Vikings with an 8-7 walk-off win.
On Sunday, the Pioneers got a taste of their own medicine in game one of a doubleheader against the Vikings. The Pioneers led 3-1 through four innings of play, with all three runs coming on a three-run home run by
Justin Amesquita.
The host Vikings tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, when Kollin Bonneville hit a sacrifice fly to score Carter Kalin from third.
Demetrius Oberg reached base on a one-out single in the top of the seventh but
Tyler Tamez and
Isaac Mata popped out to end the game.
MNC-Itasca pitcher Kole Paulsen went the distance for the Vikings, allowing three runs on three hits. Mata also went the distance for the Pioneers, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.
The Pioneers battled back from a 5-0 deficit in game two but failed to keep pace from there in a 9-5 loss. The Vikings scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning.
The Pioneers worked their way back into the game, scoring two runs on one hit in the fourth, and they tied the game with three runs on five hits in the fifth inning.
The Vikings answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth and they added an insurance run in the seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep and overall series win.
