The Northland softball team swept Minnesota North College - Vermilion in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Ely.
The Pioneers, who claimed game one by a score of 7-1, scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break open what had been a close game.
Mariah Graves allowed just one earned run on four hits with nine strikeouts in game one. Offensively, the Pioneers were led by sophomore
Sunny Edin, who went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI;
Brooke Glad, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI; and
Jada Kosmatka, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
It was more of the same for the Pioneers in a 10-4 win in game two. Graves went the distance again and allowed four runs on nine hits. She was backed by an offense that saw seven of the nine hitters record a hit. Leadoff hitter Kosmatka led the way, going 4-for-5 with a double, with two runs and two RBI.
Shavonda Bender also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday with a trip to Hibbing to face the MNC-Hibbing Cardinals in a doubleheader. The Pioneers host Minnesota North College - Rainy River for a home doubleheader on Sunday, April 28. Game one is at noon both days.
