Northland Community & Technical College took three of four games against MCAC North rival Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range during a four-game series Saturday and Sunday in Virginia, Minn.
The Pioneers took game one 8-2 with a combined strong offensive showing and solid pitching. Six Pioneer batters collected hits in game one, with both
Connor Hoyt and
Tyler Tamez going 3-for-4. Hoyt added a double, an RBI and a run scored to his stat line, while Tamez belted a solo home run and an RBI while crossing the plate three times on the day.
Hoyt also picked up the win on the mound. He went six innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits.
The host Norse returned the favor in Saturday's second game with a 7-1 win. Norse pitcher Sam Sigurdson went the distance and held the Pioneers to just three hits.
Cooper Lawrence and
Gamaliel Vasquez recorded the only hits for the Pioneers, with Lawrence going 1-for-3 and scoring the team's only run in the fourth inning, and Vasquez going 2-for-3.
Odhan Manhas went 0-for-3 at the plate but recorded the only RBI of the game on a ground out to third that scored Lawrence.
The Pioneers got an early stoppage and a complete game in a 10-0 five-inning win in game three.
Isaac Mata allowed two hits and struck out six in a five-inning shutout. Mata, Hoyt and Tamez recorded two hits apiece, with Tamez hitting a pair of doubles, and Hoyt and Mata hitting triples.
The Norse led 5-1 through an inning and a half in game four, but the Pioneers took the lead for good with six runs in the bottom of the second en route to a 9-5 win.
Justin Amesquita allowed five runs in his first two innings of work before settling and finishing his day with three shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Amesquita helped his own cause at the plate with a double and an RBI. Mata and Hoyt also hit doubles and led the Pioneers with two RBI each.
The Pioneers improved to 15-13 overall and 5-3 in the conference with the win. They currently sit in third place behind MNC-Itasca and MNC-Hibbing, who are both 8-4 in the conference.
The Pioneers are off until Saturday, April 27 when they travel to Hibbing for a double header at Minnesota North College - Hibbing, before hosing MNC-Hibbing for a double header on Sunday, April 28.
