The Northland softball team moved into a third-place tie with a pair of wins over Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range on sophomore day Saturday, May 4 at the Multi-Events Center Field 1 in Thief River Falls.
The Pioneers trailed the third place North by two games in the division standings heading into Saturday's games. The Pioneers took control early in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning and cruising to a 10-2 win behind sophomore pitcher
Kennedy Wallace.
The Norse took control early in game two and scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. They added four more in the second and seemed to be on their way to an easy win. The Pioneers had other plans, however. They rallied from a 7-3 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead, and closed the door with a one-two-three seventh to sweep the doubleheader.
The Pioneers and Norse are now tied for the third spot in the MCAC North standings with identical 8-8 records. The teams will face each other again tomorrow in Virginia, as both teams wrap up the regular season. The top three teams in the MCAC North qualify for the Region 13B Tournament, which will be held next weekend in Brainerd.
