May 9--St. Coud, Minn. -
Northland edged North Dakota State College of Science 1-0 in the opening round of the Region 13 Baseball Tournament Thursday morning in St. Cloud.
The Pioneers scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Connor Hoyt and
Odhan Manhas began the inning with back-to-back singles. Hoyt tagged up and moved up to third on a flyball out off the bat of
Justin Amesquita and scored on a sacrifice bunt by
Jonathan Perez.
In addition to scoring the game's only run, Hoyt got the start on the mound and had a day for the ages. The sophomore lefty nearly pitched a perfect game. He faced the nine-inning minimum of 27 hitters and allowed just two base runners -- one reaching via a base hit and other drawing a walk -- with 14 strikeouts.
With the win, the eighth-seeded Pioneers advanced to the Bracket A semifinals to face top-seeded Alexandria Thursday afternoon.
Alexandria scored a pair of runs in both the first and fourth innings. The Pioneers rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth, but ultimately came up short in the 4-2 loss.
The Pioneers return to Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud Friday at 2 p.m. to face North Dakota State College of Science. The Wildcats defeated MNC-Itasca 6-3 in an elimination game Thursday night.
The top-two teams from Bracket A and Bracket B advance to next week's NJCAA North Plains District Tournament.
