Northland Community & Technical College defeated Central Lakes in four sets Wednesday night in front of a loud and energetic crowd in the Northland Gym.
The Pioneers led early in the first set, but the Raiders used a late run to gain control. The Raiders won eight of the final 10 points to claim the first set 25-19.
The Pioneers returned the favor in the second set and they appeared to be on their way to an easy win with a 23-13 lead at one point. The Raiders closed the gap, but the Pioneers eventually claimed the set 25-19.
Set number three was close throughout, with the Pioneers pulling away late for another 25-19 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In September 2023, the Pioneers had the Raiders on the ropes much like they did Wednesday night with a 2-1 lead thorugh three sets, before the Raiders rallied and won the final two sets to claim the match 3-2.
The fourth set was similar to the third, with neither team going on a big run. Ultimately, the Pioneers won four of the final six points to claim the third set 25-23 and close out the victory.
Excluding forfeits, Wednesday's win over Central Lakes was Northland's first since Sept. 10, 2014 – also a 3-1 home win by the Pioneers.
Up next for the Pioneers are a pair of matches at Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range in Virginia, Minn. The Pioneers face Minnesota North College - Vermilion Friday night at 4 p.m., before wrapping up the Labor Day weekend set with a match against MNC-Mesabi Range Saturday at noon.
