The Northland Community & Technical College Volleyball team won its third straight match Wednesday night, but it wasn't easy. The Pioneers dropped the first two sets to the visiting Minnesota North College - Rainy River Voyageurs before rallying for a 3-2 win Wednesday night at the Northland Gym.
The Voyaguers looked dominant in the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-17 and 25-22. Northland Head Coach Kelly Olson said his team effectively beat itself in the first two sets.
"We had to clean up our side of the net," Olson said. "We had 24 unforced errors in the first two sets. After that, the girls really took care of the ball. We had three unforced in third, three unforced in the fourth, and I'm not sure that we had any unforced errors in the fifth set."
The Pioneers dominated the third set, winning 25-17, and they pulled away late in the fourth set, winning 25-20, to extend the match to a fifth set.
The Pioneers raced to a 4-2 lead in the third set. The Pioneers were in front 8-6 when the teams switched sides in the fifth set and they won seven of the next 10 points to clinch the comeback victory.
"I don't think we were pressing too much," Olson said. "We had really good practices the past couple of weeks. The third, fourth and fifth set is really the first time that we have seen that show up in consecutive sets. I like where we are moving towards. We operated really well when we don't shoot ourselves in the foot."
