The Northland men's basketball team used some last-second heroics to win its MCAC North opener 64-63 over Minnesota North College - Vermilion Saturday afternoon in Thief River Falls.
The Pioneers found themselves trailing 63-62 after MNC-Vermilion's Jaylen Shelly sunk one of two freethrows to break a 62-62 tie. The Pioneers got the ball back with 18 seconds remaining and took a timeout at mid-court. Coming out of the timeout, the Pioneers passed the ball around looking for an open shot and the ball eventually found its way to freshman
Adam McIntyre. A mid-range jump shot by McIntyre found nothing but net and gave Northland a 64-63 advantage with 1.4 seconds remaining.
Following a timeout, MNC-Vermilion's Tyson Rogers attempted to pass the ball the length of the court for a potential game-winner but Northland's
Javien Johnson jumped in front of Rogers' intended target for the steal as time ran out.
Overall, Saturday's game was a true back-and-forth battle, with 19 lead changes and 10 ties. Sixteen of the lead changes and eight of the ties came in the second half
Johnson led the Pioneers with 17 points and eight rebounds in his first action of the season.
Isaiah Brown was the only other Pioneer to reach double-digits in scoring with 10 points. Overall, the Pioneers got scoring contributions from nine of the 10 players in uniform.
