The Northland men's basketball team kept its Region 13 Tournament hopes alive with a 71-66 win over Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range.
The Norse defeated the Pioneers 86-81 when the teams met Jan. 17 in Virginia, Minn. The Pioneers never trailed in Wednesday night's rematch. They opened the game on a 12-4 run and led by as many as 12 in the opening half, before the Norse rallied to tie the score 26-26 with 5:10 remaining.
The Pioneers finished the half on a 13-8 run over the final five minutes to take a 39-34 advantage into the locker room.
Slow second half starts have haunted the Pioneers at times this year, but Wednesday night was not one of them. The Pioneers outscored the Norse 10-3 over the first six mintues of the second half to take a 49-37 lead. The Norse rallied, however and worked the deficit down to five points (59-54) with just over five minutes to go.
The Norse would get within three of the Pioneers on a couple occasions in the final three minutes -- 64-61 with 2:40 remaining and 67-64 with 27 seconds remaining -- but the Pioneers always answered to secure the win.
Northland got big production from its bench with
Tre Jones scoring 19 points and
Zeke Aime scoring 14. It was a similar story for the Norse, with Darren Smith, 18, and Jayvion Jackson, 12, leading the team in scoring while coming off the bench.
The Pioneers improved to 3-7 in the MCAC North and 7-18 overall.
With the loss, the Norse fell to 5-4 in the MCAC North and 11-13 overall.
The Pioneers play their final home game of the season Saturday against Gogebic at 2 p.m.
