Thief River Falls, Minn. -

The Northland men's basketball team pulled away from Gogebic Community College in the final minutes of Saturday's game to claim a 70-57 win. It was the second consecutive win for the Pioneers, who had previously struggled to close games out. 

The Pioneers previously lost to the Samsons 69-58 when the teams met Jan. 18 in Ironwood, Mich. The Pioneers are a different team at home, however, and they proved it Saturday the 13-point win. 

Saturday's game was a true back-and-forth battle. The Pioneers' biggest deficit was five points in the first half and six in the second half. Likewise, the Pioneers biggest lead was just four points until an Isaiah Brown three-pointer with 3:35 remaining gave the Pioneers a seven-point lead. 

The Pioneers finished the game on a 9-3 run with five of the nine points coming on a 5-for-6 free throw effort over the last three minutes of the game. 

The Pioneers had five players in double figures led by 13 points from Zeke Aime. Brown scored 12, with Etienne Aime, Davion Turner and Tre Jones scoring 11 points each. 

The Pioneers improved to 8-18 ovrerall. The Pioneers have a pair of road games remaining with their Region 13 playoff hopes hanging in the balance. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, the Pioneers travel to Hibbing to face the Minnesota North-Hibbing Cardinals, before wrapping up the season on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Central Lakes College.
