Visiting Minnesota North College - Itasca held the lead three times during Wednesday night's MCAC North men's basketball game against Northland. The Vikings had leads of 3-0 and 15-14 in the first half, but otherwise trailed for the duration of Wednesday night's game against the Pioneers until taking the lead for good with 36 seconds remaining. In the end, the Vikings prevailed 77-72, handing the Pioneers their third straight loss.
The Pioneers seeming took control of the game with a 16-0 run that put them in front 30-15 with 8:20 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers led 41-27 at the break but couldn't keep the momentum going early in the second half. TheVikings went on an 18-5 run over the first six and a half minutes of the second half to make the score 46-45.
The Pioneers regrouped and continued to answer each time the Vikings made it a one-possesion game. The Pioneers led by as many as eight in the final 10 minutes but the Vikings refused to go away. An
Isaiah Brown layup with 1:55 remaining gave the Pioneers a 72-68 lead. It would end up being the final score of the night for the Pioneers, as they went 0-for-3 in field goal attempts with three turnovers in the final 90 seconds of the game. The Vikings took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Luka Goshadze that made the score 73-72. Goshadze went to the line two more times in the final 16 seconds of the game and made three of four free throws.
Goshadze led all scorers with 22 points. Also in double figures for the Vikings were Dmareon Manning with 20 points, Ndarius Walker with 13 and Aiden Carlson with 11 points.
Brown, 21 points,
Zeke Aime, 19 points, and
Tre Jones, 19 points, were the leading scorers for the Pioneers.
