Northland Community & Technical College remained unbeaten in MCAC North women's basketball with a dominant 87-27 win over Minnesota North College - Itasca Wednesday night in the Northland Gym. The Pioneers followed what has become the blueprint for success so far in MCAC North play by securing a double-digit lead before the other team puts points on the board. The Pioneers opened Wednesday night's game on an 11-0 run. They led 22-9 through one quarter of play and 49-19 at the half.
The Pioneers' scoring pace slowed a bit in the second half -- they still put up 38 points over the final two quarters -- but they remained strong defensively, allowing the Vikings to score just eight second half points.
Northland sophomore
Tiyana Schwinghammer led all scorers with 19 points and she also recorded a team-high eight assists during her 31 minutes of work. Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Pioneers were Rylie Kopp, 16, Teagan Fitzsimonds, 13, Josie Iversion, 12, and
Jade Reese, 11.
Wednesday night's victory was the 14th straight for the Pioneers, who are currently ranked second in the NJCAA Divison III Coaches Poll improved to 6-0 in MCAC North games and 17-4 overall. The Vikings fell to 2-4 in MCAC North games and 6-14 overall.
