Thief River Falls, Minn. -
The Northland Community & Technical College defeated St. Cloud Technical & Community College 70-49 in the first of two Region 13B semifinal games Saturday in Thief River Falls. The Pioneers started fast, outscoring the Cyclones 23-7 in the opening quarter. The Cyclones bounced back, outplaying the Pioneers in the second quarter and cutting the deficit to 10 points (34-24) at the half.
The Pioneers' defensive ability was on full display in the third quarter. They held the Cyclones to just four points on a 2-for-14 shooting effort in the quarter and scored 18 of their own to take a 52-28 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Cyclones put up 21 points in the final frame, but it wasn't enough to make a dent in the Pioneers' lead.
Lily Manning drained three three-pointers and she was the lone Cyclone to reach double digits in scoring with 17 points.
Sophomores
Josie Iverson and Tiyana Schwinhammer scored 16 points each to lead the Pioneers. Freshman
Jade Reese also reached double figures in scoring for the Pioneers with 10 points.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday at noon against the winner of Rochester vs. Minnesota North College - Itasca.
