Rochester, Minn. -
The final score doesn't tell the whole story of Wedesday's NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship opening round game between fifth-seeded Northland and 12th-seeded Montgomery County (PA). The Pioneers never trailed in the contest and they ended up winning big, 70-46, but struggled at times in the opening half against the Raptors.Â
The Pioneers finished the first quarter on a 4-0Â to take a 17-10 lead. They held a double-digit lead for most of the second quarter, including a 27-14 advantage at the four-minute mark of the second period. The Raptors rallied, however, and finished the first half on a 10-2 run to get within five points of the Pioneers at the break.Â
The Pioneers regained the momentum and simultaneously broke the game open in with a 15-0 run over the first five minutes of the third quarter. The Raptors fist points of the quarter came with 4:49 remaining. Overall, the Pioneers outscored the Raptors 24-10 in the quarter to take a commanding 53-34 lead.Â
The Raptors kept playing hard and briefly threatened to get back into the game with a 4-0 run to open the fourth, but the Pioneers quickly regained control to outscore the Raptors 17-12 in the quarter.
The Pioneers will be back in action Thursday against fifth-seeded Anoka-Ramsey Community College in the quarterfinal round of the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship. The Pioneers and the Rams met twice during the regular season. The Golden Rams won the first meeting 63-49 Nov. 8 in Coon Rapids. The Pioneers avenged that loss with a 57-48 victory in Thief River Falls on Dec. 6.
Thursday's game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. or 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first quarterfinal game between top-seeded Rochester and ninth-seeded Joliet. The tournament can be live streamed atÂ
