Rochester, Minn. -
The shots did not fall for the Northland Community & Technical College Women's Basketball Team during its NJCAA Division III National Championship quarterfinal game against MCAC-rival Anoka-Ramsey Community College. The Golden Rams defeated the Pioneers 61-48 to end the Pioneers' hopes of a national championship.
Neither team started particularly fast, but the Golden Rams struck first on a bucket by Bella Kanz 90 seconds into the contest. The Golden Rams led 5-0 before the Pioneers got on the board with a made free throw by
Hannah Halvorson making it 5-1, before the Golden Rams resumed their run to go in front 9-1. A
Tiyana Schwinghammer layup would be the only field goal of the quarter for the Pioneers, who trailed 11-3 after 10 minutes were in the books.
The Golden Rams opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to go in front 17-3, but the Pioneers would battle back.
Teagyn Fitzsimonds drained a three to end the Golden Rams' run and start a 7-0 run for the Pioneers. From there, the teams effectively traded scores for the remainder of the half, with the Golden Rams leading 24-17 at the break.
The Golden Rams added to their lead in a relatively high-scoring third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 18-14, to take a 42-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
A 5-0 run to start the fourth gave Anoka-Ramsey its biggest lead of the afternoon, 47-31, with just over nine minutes remaining. The Rams maintained a double-digit lead for most of the quarter. The Pioneers briefly got to within eight of the Golden Rams (46-54) with a 5-0 run to with just over two minutes remaining. The Golden Rams regrouped, however, and made their free throws down the stretch to pull away for the 13-point win.
Mariam Alowonie, 12 points, and Kanz, 11 points, dominated in the paint and led the Golden Rams in scoring. Schwinghammer, 12, and
Jade Reese, 11, were the Pioneers' top scorers.
Thursday's game was the third meeting of the 2024-25 season between the Pioneers and Golden Rams. The Golden Rams won the first meeting 63-49 Nov. 8 in Coon Rapids. The Pioneers avenged that loss with a 57-48 victory in Thief River Falls on Dec. 6.
Anoka-Ramsey faces top-seeded Rochester at 4 p.m. in the first of two semifinal games on Friday. Northland faces Joliet in a consolation semifinal game at noon.
