Pioneers outlast Wolves in consolation semifinal

Northland Community & Technical college played with a double-digit lead for most of the afternoon in Friday's NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship consolation semifinal game against Joliet Community College. The Pioneers' last double-digit advantage was an 11-point lead, 65-54, with five minutes remaining. With the game hanging in the balance, the Wolves rallied and nearly pulled off the comeback. 

The Pioneers and Wolves traded scores early but the Pioneers got hot and finished the first quarter on a 12-2 run and led 18-7 through one quarter of play.

The Pioneers added to their lead in a back-and-forth second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 18-16 and taking a 36-23 lead onto the locker room.

The Wolves picked up steam throughout the game. After scoring just seven points in the first quarter, the Wolves scored 16 in the second, 22 in the third and 25 in the fourth. The Wolves' 22-point third included a 7-2 run to end the quarter and get within eight points of the Pioneers at 53-45.

The Pioneers led by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves never went away. The Wolves scored 10 points in the final 38 seconds and cut the deficit to five on a couple of occasions. During that stretch, Northland sophomores Tiyana Schwinghammer combined to 9-for-10 from the foul line to keep the Wolves at a two-possession deficit.

Iverson led the Pioneers in scoring with 31 points -- 18 of which came on a 6-for-9 effort from beyond the arc. Iverson also converted 9-of-10 free throw attempts. Jade Reese scored 17 points, and Schwinghammer added 15 points.

The Wolves had three players in double figures, with Lovly Tua-Link leading thev way with 26 points. Na'Kiyah Robertson turned in a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Jazlynn Foster scored 15 points to go with nine rebounds.

Northland will face Onondaga Community College in the consolation championship at 10 a.m. Saturday.
