Marysville, Kan. -
The Northland Community & Technical College baseball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions and three of four games overall against NJCAA Division II Dakota College at Bottineau in a two-day trip to Marysville, Kan.
The lone win in the four-game series came in Saturday's game two with the Pioneers defeating the Lumberjacks 3-1. Sophomores
Cooper Lawrence and
Tyler Tamez (2) accounted for all three of the Pioneers' runs, with brothers Justin and
Austin Amesquita collected RBIs for the Pioneers. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second but the Lumberjacks countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. The Pioneers regained the lead in the top of the third and added an insurance run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead that would hold up as the final margin.
Northland freshman
Brandon Castilleja picked up his third win of the season, going six innings and allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out six Lumberjack hitters and walked just one batter. Picking up the save for the Pioneers was sophomore
Aidan Powell. The lefty allowed just one walk and no hits in a scoreless seventh inning.
The Pioneers weren't as fortunate in the rest of the series. In game one Saturday, the Lumberjacks broke a 1-1 deadlock and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for a 2-1 win in game one. On Sunday, the Pioneers came up short in a pair of shootouts, falling 20-10 in five innings in game one, before dropping a 13-12 decision in game two.
