White Bear Lake, Minn. -
The Northland baseball team was swept by perennial power Century Community College in a Friday afternoon doubleheader in White Bear Lake. The host Wood Ducks claimed the opening game by a score of 10-1 and they completed the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in game two.
The Wood Ducks scored first with a single tally in the bottom of the second. They added five runs in the third and a pair of runs in the fourth inning to go in front 8-0 in game one. The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the fifth when Josiah Motelongo drew a bases loaded walk to drive in
Gamaliel Vasquez. The Wood Ducks answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 10-1 win.
Game two was much more competitive. The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by
Justin Amesquita to score Montelongo from third. The Wood Ducks answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, and a run in the bottom of the third to go in front 4-1. The Pioneers cut the deficit to one run with Vasquez singling to left to score
Justin Amesquita and
Isaac Lopez in the top of the fourth. The Wood Ducks answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.
Aidan Powell and
Rayce Fisher took the pitching losses for the Pioneers. Powell alllowed six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work in game one, while Fisher allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in his five innings of work.
The sweep extended the Wood Ducks' winning streak to four games and pushed their season record to 14-7.
The Pioneers dropped their fourth straight and fell to 7-17 overall.
The Pioneers open MCAC North play at home with a pair of doubleheaders against Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range on Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6. Game one is 1 p.m. both days.
