Minnesota North College - Itasca swept Northland Community & Technical College in an MCAC North softball doubleheader Wednesday at Pioneer Field in Thief River Falls. The Pioneers were playing at home for the first time during the 2025 season. The visiting Vikings scored runs in the top of the second, third and fourth innings on their way to a 3-0 win in game one.
The Pioneers reached base seven times in game one but couldn't get a runner across the plate. Leadoff hitter
Annelise Castillo reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Kora Sorter went 1-for-4.
Liza Bjerklie,
Anneke Lacina,
Kaydence Augustine and
Emilee Tate all reached on walks but were otherwise hitless.
Leslie Murken got the game one start for the Pioneers. She went the distance, allowing three runs on nine hits. She walked three batters and struck out five.
The Pioneers led 1-0 through four innings in game two, but things started to go south in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. The Vikings plated three runs in each inning, to take a 6-1 lead. The Pioneers answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but they couldn't draw any closer. The Vikings added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and went on to take game two by a score of 7-3.
Sorter was the only Pioneer to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Schwinghammer, Bjerklie, Murken and
Rylie Fredrickson also recorded hits for the Pioneers. Castillo, Schwinhammer and Bjerklie scored runs and Murken and Lacina recorded RBIs for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday against Minnesota North College - Vermilion in Ely, with games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The next home action for the Pioneers will be Saturday, April 19 against MCAC-North-leading Central Lakes College.
