The Northland baseball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Thief River Falls. The Pioneers were coming off a doubleheader sweep of the Norse on Tuesday afternoon, when they won by scores of 8-4 and 12-1 in five innings. They completed the series sweep Wednesday with two more wins, claiming game one 5-4 and game two 17-8.
The Pioneers were the visitors on the scoreboard both games on Wednesday. In game one, they plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning with leadoff hitter
Dylan Smith scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Gamaliel Vasquez, and number two hitter
Joshua Torres scoring on a wild pitch.
The Norse got a run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Max Bahr to score leadoff hitter and catcher Eli Olson.
The score remained 2-1 until the Pioneers pushed a run across the sixth inning, with Smith scoring on an error by Olson. The Pioneers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with
Isaac Lopez and
Tyler Tamez scoring on an error.
Korbin Kramer got the start for the Pioneers and earned the win after going four and two-thirds innings. He allowed one earned run on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Rayce Fisher pitched the final two and a third innings to earn the save. He allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Game two had the appearance of a game that would end early via the 10-run rule early on, and again late, but it ended up going the distance with the Pioneers taking a 17-8 win.
The Pioneers trailed 2-1 after one inning, but plated three runs in the top of the second and third innings to go in front 7-2. The Norse tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers answered with four runs in the top of the fourth, another in the fifth and five in the top of the sixth to go in front 17-7. The Norse kept the game alive with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but didn't get any closer in the seventh inning.
Austin Amesquita and
Jeremiah Vallejo both went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, with each scoring three runs. Cooper Lawrance went 2-for-4 and also scored three runs.
