Northland Community & Technical College dominated the opening game of Friday's MCAC North softball doubleheader against Minnesota North College - Vermilion, winning 19-7 in five innings, before falliong 12-11 in game two.
The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, before adding five runs in the second and third innings to take a 12-0 advantage.
The Ironhawks got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Both teams put up crooked numbers in the fourth inning, with the Pioneers plating six runs and the Ironhawks answering with four to make the score 18-7. The Pioneers added one more run in the top of the fifth, before retiring the side in the bottom half of the inning to get the early stoppage.

Emilee Tate and Halvorson scored two runs apiece, with Schwinghammer (4), Augustine (4), Murken (3), Castillo (2), Lacina (2), and Tate (2) each batting in multiple runs.
Nineteen runs was more than enough support for Augustine, who went the distance allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings of work. She struck three and walked one MNC-Vermilion batter.
The Pioneers bats were on fire again in game two as the Pioneers nearly pulled off the sweep. The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in each of their first two at-bats, but trailed 7-4 through two innings of play after the Ironhawks scored four in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom half of the second.
The Pioneers tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth but the Ironhawks regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-7. The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the sixth to secure a 10-8 lead -- their first lead since the top of the first.
The Ironhawks ansered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-10 ballgame. The Pioneers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, but the sweep slipped away when the Ironhawks answered that go-ahead score with two runs in the seventh to claim the walkoff win.
Sorter led the Pioneers in hitting with a 3-for-5 effort. She batted in a run and scored two more. Schwinghammer and Bjerklie recorded two hits each, with Schwinghammer scoring three times and Bjrerklie soring twice and batting in one runner.
Murken took the game two loss. She allowed 12 runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits in six and two-thirds innings of work.
