The Northland softball team plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 7-6 win in game one of a doubleheader against Minnesota North College - Rainy River Wednesday afternoon at the Multi-Events Center in Thief River Falls. Due to heavy rain on Tuesday, Wednesday's game was moved from Pioneer Field to Field 3 at the MEC.
The Voyageurs led early in Wednesday's game, scoring a run in the top of the first and adding two more in the top of the second. The Pioneers answered and took their first lead of the ballgame with four runs in the bottom of the third, and they added a single tally in the fourth to go in front 5-3.
The Voyagers went back in front in the top of the sixth with a three-run inning. That set up the dramatic bottom of the seventh with the Pioneers loading the bases, before scoring the game-tying and go-ahead runs with one out in the inning.
Liza Bjerklie,
Leslie Murken and
Kaydence Augustine had mulit-hit games for the Pioneers. Bjerklie went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Murken went 2-for-3 and scored two runs; and Augustine went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Murken went the distance in the pitcher's circle and allowed just one earned run on seven Minnesota North-Rainy River hits. She walked six batters and struck out three.
Game two was dominated by the Voyageurs, who scored four runs in the top of the first, one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to go in front 10-0. The Pioneers plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't enough to keep the game going as the Voyageurs won via the eight-run rule, 10-2 in five innings.
Northland sophomore
Tiyana Schwinghammer recorded the Pioneers' only hit against MNC-Rainy River game two starter Raegan Hanson.
Rylie Fredrickson and
Kora Sorter scored runs for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers are off until Saturday, May 3 when they travel to Grand Rapids to face the Minnesota North-Itasca Vikings for a doubleheader with games at noon and 2 p.m. The Pioneers wrap-up the regular season at home with a doubleheader against Minnesota North-Mesabi Range on Sunday, May 4, with games at 1 and 3 p.m.
