Northland Community & Technical College saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end with a 9-5 MCAC Northern Division baseball loss to Minnesota North College - Vermilion Saturday afternoon in Ely. The 9-5 loss was the first in MCAC Northern Division play for the Pioneers, who were 12-0 and two games ahead of MNC-Itasca in the division standings heading into Saturday's game. The Pioneers bounced back quickly from their first division setback, defeating the Ironhawks 5-1 in game two. The two teams will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday.
Game 1
The Pioneers led 2-0 after scoring a run in both the second and third innings. The Ironhawks used a three-run bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Pioneers briefly tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, before the Ironhawks used another three-run inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Ironhawks added three more runs in the sixth and hung on for the 9-5 win.
Northland freshman
Austin Amesquita had a big day at the plate for the Pioneers. He went 4-for-4, with a double, and he scored two runs.
Jeremiah Vallejo was the only other Pioneer with multiple hits in game one. He went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a team-high two RBIs.
Kyle Robinson got the start for the Pioneers and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in five innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out six.
Game 2
The Pioneers took control early in game two behind a strong pitching performance by
Brandon Castilleja. The freshman from San Antonio, Texas, pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Castilleja was staked to an early 5-0 lead after the Pioneers plated three runs in the top of the first and added two more in the top of the second.

The game two win gives the Pioneers a 21-18 record overall and 13-1 record in MCAC North play. They remain two games ahead of second-place MNC-Itasca after the Vikings split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against the MNC-Hibbing Cardinals.
