A pair of lopsided losses ended the 2025 season for the Northland Community & Technical College baseball team. One day after securing a spot in the Bracket A championship game the Pioneer with a 12-4 win over the Alexandria Tech Legends, the Pioneers suffered back-to-back losses to top-seeded Century College Wood Ducks and the Legends in a rematch, to end the season.
The Wood Ducks swept the regular season series against the Pioneers, winning by scores of 10-1 and 5-3 when the teams met for a doubleheader on March 28. Things got off to a rocky start Saturday with the Wood Ducks plating four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first.
The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the third inning with
Justin Amesquita hitting a two-out RBI double to score
Cooper Lawrence from second.
The Wood Ducks answered with five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 9-1 lead.
The Pioneers got a run back in the sixth with
Gamaliel Vasquez leading off the inning with a single and moving to second on a walk by
Tyler Tamez, before scoring on a one-out single by
Austin Amesquita.
The Wood Ducks scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game via the eight-run rule.
The Pioneers' hopes of being one of the four teams from Region 13 to qualify for the North Plains District Tournament came down to a rematch against the Legends.
Everything seemingly went the Pioneers' way in the 12-4 win in the playoff opener and it seemed to go against the Pioneers in the rematch with the Legends winning 11-4. Things started out well, with the Pioneers scoring two runs on four hits in the top of the third and they added a run in the fourth to go up 3-0.
The Legends scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Pioneers answered with a run on one hit in the top of the sixth to tie the game 4-4.
The tie was short-lived, however, as the Legends answered the Pioneers' score with a run on one hit in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. The Legends added a pair of runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to take an 11-4 lead that would hold up for the final.
