A 3-1 loss to defending MCAC South/Region 13A champion Minnesota West was the lone blemish for the Northland volleyball team in the season-opening MCAC Crossover Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids.
The Pioneers bounced back from the 3-1 loss to Minnesota West to claim a five-set win over Western Tech to conclude day one of the event. The Pioneers wrapped up the two-day event with a pair of four-set wins over Riverland and Ridgewater.
Minnesota West
Northland Head Coach Kelly Olson said Minnesota West presented an early test for his team.
"We knew coming into the Crossover Tourney we would have a match that we could see right away how we stack up," Olson said. "We came out and battled, but except for set two, we just came up short. We had flashes where we were strong, followed by periods of indecision, miscommunication, and untimely errors."
The Pioneers dropped the opening set 25-17, but bounced back to take set two 28-26. The Blue Jays took sets three and four by scores of 25-19 and 25-20 to secure the win.
"Taking set two, we moved into the third set with the momentum," Olson said. "Again, we were a little inconsistent and fizzled. Set four was a carbon copy of set three."
Friday's match was much closer than the previous meeting between the teams. Minnesota West defeated Northland 25-17, 25-7, 25-12 in the 2024 Region 13A semifinal round. Olson was pleased with the way his team competed.
"It was a decent match for us, but we just couldn't pass well enough to get any offense going," Olson said. "Our out-of-system offense got a lot of work though, and in these early-season matches, usually the best passing teams win. We had our moments, just not enough of them."
Western Tech
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in match number two, taking sets one and two by scores of 25-16 and 25-18.
Western Tech took advantage of several Northland errors in set number three and stayed alive with a 25-15 win. The Cavaliers kept the momentum going and stayed alive with a 26-24 win in set number four to force a fifth set.
The Pioneers regained control in the fifth, winning 15-9, to take the match three sets to two.
"Although we didn't play very well, we did play with a lot of energy," Olson said. " To me it looked like nine people trying really hard to work hard, but we needed to be smarter. In the fifth set, we took control, passed pretty well, and finished a few plays when they were needed to get that last set win, and the first of the season."
Riverland
The Pioneers were one of the last teams on the court to end day one and one of the first on the court on day two against Riverland. Despite the early start, the Pioneers were able to take the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19.
"With a late-night match the night before, and an 8 a.m. start time for the second day's first match, I was a little worried we would be sluggish and struggle to focus," Olson said. "We did not pass very well that first set, but did see us win the set. In set two our passing was greatly improved, but our margin of victory was less.
The Blue Devils stayed alive with a 25-20 win in the third set, but the Pioneers put the match away with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
"We were up 2-0 when the third set rolled around," Olson said. "Again, we made a few too many errors and allowed Riverland to win the third. After the switch, going into the fourth set, saw us really clean up some of our issues. It was great to win 3-1, putting us in line with a team goal of going at least 3-1, but we would have to deal with a strong Ridgewater team."
Ridgewater
The Pioneers started strong against the Warriors, winning the first set 25-9.
"Our passing was much better than the last three matches and set the tone," Olson said. "Blocking really came alive and was a great advantage for us."
The Warriors bounced back and won a back-and-forth second set 25-22 to even the match score.
Set three was also a back-and-forth battle, with the Pioneers emerging with a 27-25 win, before clinching the win with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
"Moving into the fourth set, I saw us really starting to play volleyball consistently," Olson said. "We controlled the fourth set from start to finish. Ridgewater made a four-point run to move from 13 to 17, but we got the last sideout to finish the set off with a 25-17 win.
"Overall, the weekend showed a lot of things we need to get better at. Although I know we can improve on a lot of skills moving forward, it was great to see the resiliency we showed through the four matches. We improved and found a few rotations, I think we can be successful with."
