Century College defeated Northland Community & Technical College in straight sets in semifinal round of the NJCAA Region XIII-A Tournament Friday at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids. The Wood Ducks, who entered the tournament ranked 10th in the nation in NJCAA Division III, defeated the Pioneers 25-15, 25-15, 25-17.
The Wood Ducks were strong defensively, with 63 digs, three solo blocks, six block assists and no blocking errors as a team as they held the Pioneers to just 22 kills in the three-set match. The Pioneers, on the other hand, committed 23 attack errors and nine blocking errors to account for 32 of the Wood Ducks 75 points.
Freshmen
Riley Gust, 8, and
Allyson Hart, 7, led the Pioneers in kills. Sophomore setter
Sunny Edin recorded 18 assists. Hart led the team in digs with 13.
Final match
Friday's regional semifinal was the final volleyball appearance for Edin,
Giselle Cole,
Grace Loeslie,
Madysen Nordstrom and
Kennedy Wallace as members of the Northland volleyball team. It was also the final match for co-head coaches Abdul Chamma and
Courtney Nordby. Chamma finished his coaching career with a record of 206 wins and 126 losses. He notched win number 200 earlier this season against Gogebic Community College on Sept. 15. Nordby initially took over for Chamma prior to the 2018 season. Chamma served as interim coach in 2019, there was no season in 2020, and the duo of Chamma and Nordby have served as co-head coaches for the past three seasons. Overall, Nordy went 61-35 as Northland's head coach/co-head coach.
